ADULT LITERACY
Our many years of working on many projects and programmes clearly proves that adult literacy, more than any other factor, will play a very important role in fighting poverty.
Illiteracy has a negative impact on project implementation. Conscious of this, SHUMAS has in recent years incorporated some adult literacy programmes within the Women's Agricultural programme.
A new FIOH Coop launches...
At the initial programme, we ran the training ourselves, by training some women leaders of grassroots associations. Now these leaders, alongside their cooperative activities, help to teach other women basic numeracy, writing and spelling their names.
At the present we are helping some of our target women's groups to institutionalise the training on certain days of the week. This we hope to extend to all our target grassroot communities.
In the years to come, we will be devoting more of our resources and energy to promote and support Adult Literacy Programmes.
